LEARN ABOUT KAALA: YOUR GUIDE TO JAPAN’S UNDERGROUND MUSIC

At Kaala, we immerse ourselves in Japan’s underground music scene. With years of experience playing, booking, and exploring, we bring the raw energy and community of the underground to you. From new bands to iconic venues, we share insights and resources to connect you with this vibrant culture.

THE CORE TEAM

Kaala may be a loose-knit collective of passionate contributors to Japan’s underground music scene, but at its heart, it’s operated by Matt and Thom. Together, they bring over a decade of hands-on experience in Japan’s vibrant independent music culture.

Matt and Thom’s journey began as collaborators in the underground, playing in bands such as Worship Pain, Retch, and Darkcorpse. Their shared passion for extreme music has led them to organize countless shows, connect with bands from across the globe, and support the local scene through creative collaborations.

Beyond performing, they’ve worked tirelessly to foster a deeper connection between Japan’s underground and the wider world, combining Matt’s expertise in event booking and Thom’s creative artistry to grow Kaala into a hub for music fans and travelers alike. Their goal is simple: to document, promote, and support the raw energy, unique culture, and uncompromising spirit of Japan’s underground music scene.

MATT KETCHUM

In addition to his work with Worship Pain, Retch, and Darkcorpse, Matt has performed with Iwate’s Kraken Strike, Tokyo’s Bafomet, and Seattle’s Bakushin, showcasing his diverse contributions to the underground music scenes in both Japan and the U.S. His deep involvement in music stems from a lifelong passion for creativity and community, as well as a commitment to fostering spaces where unique voices and bold expressions thrive.

Beyond music, Matt is a relentless experimentalist, wearing many hats across industries:

MKUltraman: His solo business consultancy specializes in creative solutions for niche industries and independent projects, reflecting his passion for pushing boundaries and exploring new ideas.

Akiyaz.io: As the founder of Japan’s leading full-service research and brokerage firm for rural and vacant properties (akiya), Matt combines his expertise in market analysis with a vision for revitalizing rural areas and making unique opportunities accessible to clients worldwide.

JP Vinyl: Through his Japanese vinyl subscription box service, Matt curates rare and sought-after records for collectors, connecting global enthusiasts with the rich and diverse world of Japanese music.

When he’s not immersed in these ventures, Matt thrives on exploration. Outside Tokyo, you’ll likely find him venturing into the forest or diving into the ocean, reconnecting with nature and finding inspiration in Japan’s stunning landscapes. In the city, he gravitates toward live music venues or pushes his limits at the gym, embodying the same energy and drive that fuels his creative and professional pursuits.

Matt’s unique blend of artistic passion, entrepreneurial spirit, and love for the underground defines his approach to everything he does, making him an integral force behind Kaala Music and beyond.

THOM SMITH

Thom Smith has been an integral part of Japan’s underground music scene since moving to the country over a decade ago. As a drummer, he has balanced playing in multiple bands at any given time, reflecting his passion and dedication to extreme music. Currently, he drums for Tokyo-based Worship Pain and Swazönd, while also lending his talents to international projects like Amputee (NYC), Foretold (California), and Retch (Canada). His rhythmic versatility and relentless energy have made him a vital force in each of these projects, uniting a global network of underground musicians.

Beyond the stage, Thom is an accomplished visual artist whose creative talents have shaped the aesthetic identities of many bands. From logos to album artwork, his designs have become synonymous with the raw, intense spirit of the underground. Over the years, his artistic portfolio has grown to include freelance design work, showcasing a range of styles and mediums. You can explore Thom’s visual creations and professional work on his website, which serves as a testament to his skill and dedication to both music and art.

When he’s not drumming or designing, Thom pursues his other passions. An avid cyclist, he takes on long-distance rides to escape the city and explore Japan’s stunning landscapes. Back at home, he enjoys spending time with his pet bearded dragon, Northern Sky—an affectionate nod to the legendary Darkthrone album. Thom’s unique blend of creativity, musical talent, and adventurous spirit makes him a cornerstone of Kaala’s mission to celebrate and support Japan’s underground music culture.
