ABOUT KAALA

We’re driven by a passion for access to Japan’s unique underground music cultures, showcasing the diversity & creativity beyond the mainstream.

THE CORE TEAM

Kaala is a loose-knit collection of actors in Japan’s underground, but is operated by Matt & Thom.

They’ve worked together for over 10 years in the Japanese scene, playing together in Worship Pain, Retch, and Darkcorpse, booking shows, and collaborating on artistic works.

MATT KETCHUM

In addition to the bands above, Matt’s also played with Iwate’s Kraken Strike, Tokyo’s Bafomet, and Seattle’s Bakushin.

He’s also a serial experimentalist, operating:

  • His solo business consultancy MKUltraman

  • The leading full-service research & brokerage firm for rural & vacant property in Japan (aka akiya) at Akiyaz.io

  • Japanese vinyl record subscription boxes at JP Vinyl

In his free time, Matt can often be found outside of Tokyo either in the forest or the ocean. In the city, he’s probably at a show or the gym.

THOM SMITH

Thom has been drumming in at least a few bands concurrently in the 10+ years he has lived in Japan. Currently, he is playing with Worship Pain and Swazönd in Tokyo, and Amputee (NYC), Foretold (CAL), and Retch (CAN) internationally.

As a visual artist, he has contributed his skills in creating the logos and artwork for his bands and others. Over the years, his design portfolio has expanded and he does freelance design as well. Work is viewable at his website.

Thom is also an avid cyclist, and enjoys long distance rides in his spare time. And chilling with his pet bearded dragon, Northern Sky. Yes, that is a Darkthrone reference, haha!
